The basic burglar alarm is a simple electric circuit put on the entry way. Likewise in any circuit, electricity flows between two points of opposite charge. Opening or closing the path of the circuit, turns the electricity on or off. In normal circuits, the switch acts as the circuit breaker but in case of burglar alarm systems the opening of door or window acts as the switch.
These alarms can be divided into two categories depending upon the working of circuit:
• Closed-circuit system: In this system, the electric circuit is closed when the door is shut. Thus as long as the door remains closed, the electricity flows from one end to the other end of the circuit. When the door is opened, the circuit gets opened thereby stopping the flow of electricity which in turn triggers the alarm.

• Open-circuit system: In this system, the electric circuit gets closed when the door is opened. As long as the door remains opened, the flow of electricity is there. Closing the door stops the flow and triggers the alarm.

Any of the type of alarm system may be chosen depending upon the place where it has to be installed. It would be better to say “install home burglar alarm security system and keep criminals away”.
